Shohin Japanese Black Pine Workshop with John Romano (March 02, 2024)
This popular Japanese Black Pine workshop is a hands-on educational event focused on the art of growing, transplanting, and caring for black pine 'Mikawa' bonsai trees.
The Shohin Japanese Black Pine 'Mikawa,' selected for this workshop are phenomenal. Petite masterpiece that embodies the essence of sophistication. This diminutive yet majestic cultivar showcases a harmonious blend of fine needles, compact foliage, and an elegant silhouette. Perfectly suited for Shohin, the 'Mikawa' variety is renowned for its exquisite charm and ease of care. And who better than for John Romano to teach this Shohin Workshop.
NOTE: The Workshop Fee Includes a gnarly looking hand-selected Japanese Black Pine. It’s got Size & Shape, Age, Health, and it typically retails for $225+.
Here's what you can expect from Pete Olson's workshop:
- Introduction to black pine bonsai: Participants will learn about the characteristics and cultural requirements of black pine trees, including light, water, and soil needs.
- Repotting techniques: Participants will learn how to properly repot black pine bonsai trees. NOTE: You will discuss this topic, however, actual Repotting will be done later.
- Pruning & Wiring techniques: Participants will learn how to use wire to shape and style black pine bonsai trees.
- Styling and design: Participants will learn how to design and create aesthetically pleasing black pine bonsai trees.
- Care and maintenance: Participants will learn how to care for black pine bonsai trees, including how to fertilize, water, and protect them from pests and disease.
Most workshops are hands-on, allowing participants to work on their own bonsai trees and receive guidance from an experienced instructor. These workshops can be a great way for bonsai enthusiasts to learn new skills, meet other bonsai enthusiasts, and improve their bonsai trees.
John Romano has selected AWESOME plant material (Included with your fee) and will guide the styling of your Bonsai.
About the Japanese Black Pines - included with your fee:
- They're approximately 8 years old and range from 10 to 14 inches tall - currently. They're in 1-gallon nursery pots.
- They are raw "pre-bonsai" that have gone untouched for a years.
- Each tree has great branching and understated movement.
You will leave with a healthy tree ready for the next step, later in the season or next spring.
Participation Level: Intermediate
Attendee Cost: $195 per student and Includes the Japanese Black Pine
Duration: 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. Please arrive a few minutes early.

- Black Pine Tree
- Bonsai tools, soil, and aluminum wire to support the class
What’s NOT included:
- Bonsai Pot: Participants have color and shape preferences. It’s not included but we have thousands of pots to choose from.

- Attendee Cost: $195 per student
- Duration: 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. If you arrive a few minutes early, you'll have more time to enjoy the nursery!
- Limited Class size: 8 students.
- Location: 914 S. Main Street, Bellingham, MA, 02019. Unless otherwise specified, all students should meet in the greenhouse labeled “Workshop.” It’s right behind our retail store – you can’t miss it.
- Refreshments Available: We have refreshments available for sale (Soda, Water, snacks).
- No Bathroom: There is a portable washroom at the facility, starting March 1st.

Shipping Bonsai Trees:
Bonsai trees are generally shipped on Mondays & Tuesdays to avoid having them stay in the boxes for any extra time over the weekends.
Shipping Non-Tree Items
All non-bonsai items such as bonsai pots and bonsai supplies are shipped within 48 hours of receiving payment. Most orders are shipped either the same day or the next day, depending on the time of day the order is received.
Important Guidelines:
** We cannot ship to a FPO, APO, P.O. Box or to locations in Alaska, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hawaii or anywhere internationally.
** All Bonsai are shipped direct from the nursery and may ship separately from other items purchased via the Bonsai Outlet.
** If extreme weather is expected, we may delay shipping your Bonsai tree to guarantee a healthy arrival; in such a case we will contact you. We are shipping living trees and must be conscious of the temperature conditions to the delivery address, as well as, while in transit. That said, we reserve the right to hold the tree(s) to guarantee a healthy delivery. We will Hold Your Tree Until It is Safe to Ship.
