35+ Year Old Japanese Black Pine – Classic Movement, Gerald Rainville Grown
This isn’t just another Japanese Black Pine—it’s a tree with history and presence.
Seed-grown and developed for over 35 years by the renowned Gerald Rainville, this bonsai embodies the essence of JBP: rugged bark, strong taper, and an unmistakable sense of movement in the trunk. Its branch structure is already well established, giving you a powerful foundation for further refinement and styling.
We purchased every last one of Gerald’s mature Shohin-Size JBPs on our most recent trip north. Once these sell, that’s the end of this chapter—no more will be available.
Japanese Black Pines are treasured for their resilience, dramatic bark texture, and role as one of the cornerstone species of bonsai. Finding one with this much age and character is rare. Finding one grown entirely from seed, and carrying Gerald’s name, is rarer still.
If you’ve been searching for a collector’s tree with both pedigree and potential, this may be the one.
