Bleach (or whiten) and preserve deadwood on Bonsai Trees

In nature, deadwood is created when a tree is hit by lightning, exposed to drought or when branches snap due to ice storms, wind or weight of snow. The wood dies off and is bleached by intense sunlight, over time.

So how do people replicate on a bonsai trees – to make it look old? In Bonsai lingo, creating deadwood on Bonsai, is called Jin or Shari. It can enhance the tree's character significantly.

- "Jin" is a bare-stripped part of branch

- "Shari" is a barkless part of trunk.

A jin is meant to show age, or show that the tree has struggled to survive and it’s a great way to add character and style to your bonsai tree. Similar to jin, A small shari usually runs vertically on or near the front of the trunk.

Ho Yoku Jin Seal allows you to create “deadwood” appearance.

You simply apply undiluted Jin Seal with brush onto dampened deadwood. The best time to create deadwood is the early spring or late summer.
