Dive into the art of bonsai with our hands-on workshop focused on the Hawaiian Umbrella – one of the most popular and friendly trees for beginners.
This beginner-stage session is designed to teach you the fundamentals of bonsai care, styling, and maintenance.
You'll start with a raw Hawaiian Umbrella and, under expert guidance, learn how to shape and nurture it into a stunning bonsai.
The workshop will cover essential techniques such as pruning, wiring, and root care, while also providing insights into the unique characteristics of the tree.
This hands-on experience is perfect for those new to bonsai or anyone looking to deepen their understanding of this beautiful art form. By the end of the workshop, you'll not only have a bonsai of your own to take home but also the confidence and skills to continue your bonsai journey.

Bonsai Basics is an All-Inclusive introductory, hands-on workshop, designed for people who are new to the art of bonsai. The 2 hour workshop covers the basics of bonsai, including:
- Brief history and origins of bonsai.
- Understanding the types of trees suitable for bonsai.
- The principles of bonsai design and styling.
- Basic techniques for planting, pruning, wiring, and repotting bonsai trees.
- Care and maintenance of bonsai trees, including watering, fertilizing, and pest control.
The hands-on workshop is the perfect place for beginners to demystify the art of Bonsai! Upon completing the workshop, you'll walk away with an awesome bonsai tree, but more importantly, you’ll have the confidence to care for it.
The instructor will help you select a “pre-bonsai” (a trained plant in a nursery pot), transplant, trim, prune and transform your tree. After a couple of hours, you’ll go home with an awesome Bonsai tree and a full understanding of maintenance.
All workshops are led by one of our Bonsai experts. We provide some of the happiest and healthiest Bonsai trees, and we love to share our knowledge!
What’s Included with the All-Inclusive Workshop:
- Seasoned Instructor: Our instructors brings a wealth of knowledge, skills, and practical expertise to the table in the art and science of bonsai cultivation. They've dedicated a substantial amount of time to delve into the study, practice, and mastery of bonsai techniques.
- Hawaiian Umbrella Tropical Bonsai Tree
- Ceramic Bonsai Pot: Customize your bonsai's home with the ability to choose from a diverse array of curated bonsai pots. However, we've got an extensive collection of over 1,000 ceramic pots, and you'll receive a $10 credit if you prefer to select something different.
- Essential Instruments: All the tools, soil, and necessary instruments will be readily available for your use. We've got you covered to ensure a seamless and enriching bonsai experience.
What's NOT Included with the Workshop:
- Handmade or Retail Bonsai pots. If you prefer a ceramic pot from the ones we pre-selected, we'll give you a $10 credit towards another selection.
About the Workshop & Location:
- Attendee Cost: $75 per student
- Duration: 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm. If you arrive a few minutes early, you'll have more time to enjoy the nursery!
- Limited Class size: 8 students.
- Location: 914 S. Main Street, Bellingham, MA, 02019. Unless otherwise specified, all students should meet in the greenhouse labeled “Workshop.” It’s right behind our retail store – you can’t miss it.
- Refreshments Available: We have refreshments available for sale (Soda, Water, snacks).
- Bathroom: There is a portable washroom at the facility.
** All sales are final. No Refunds will be given on workshops provided by New England Bonsai Gardens.

Shipping Bonsai Trees:
Bonsai trees are generally shipped on Mondays & Tuesdays to avoid having them stay in the boxes for any extra time over the weekends.
Shipping Non-Tree Items
All non-bonsai items such as bonsai pots and bonsai supplies are shipped within 48 hours of receiving payment. Most orders are shipped either the same day or the next day, depending on the time of day the order is received.
Important Guidelines:
** We cannot ship to a FPO, APO, P.O. Box or to locations in Alaska, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hawaii or anywhere internationally.
** All Bonsai are shipped direct from the nursery and may ship separately from other items purchased via the Bonsai Outlet.
** If extreme weather is expected, we may delay shipping your Bonsai tree to guarantee a healthy arrival; in such a case we will contact you. We are shipping living trees and must be conscious of the temperature conditions to the delivery address, as well as, while in transit. That said, we reserve the right to hold the tree(s) to guarantee a healthy delivery. We will Hold Your Tree Until It is Safe to Ship.
