With over 50 years of working with clay, I feel I’ve finally learned enough to create a truly proper bonsai pot. After earning my M.F.A. from Rhode Island School of Design in 1980, I became a full-time ceramic artist which led to crafting pottery, sculpture, and commissions using a variety of firing techniques.

My studio and kiln are in Smithfield, RI, where I focus on wood firing, a method that feels made for bonsai pots. It’s a collaboration between water, air, fire, and clay. The flame dances through the kiln, creating natural variations in color, subtle glaze shifts, and textures that make each pot one-of-a-kind.

As my knowledge of bonsai deepens, I aim for my pots to evolve alongside the trees they hold. My love of trees is what led me to bonsai - and now, I’m learning to care for a collection of my own.
