Antique Canton Pot

Cantonese pot, have a long history of production in the Guangdong province of China. Canton pots was highly prized for its distinctive glazes and fine quality, and was exported to many countries around the world.

The blue, green, and lapis lazuli glazes are indeed some of the most common and popular colors found on Cantonese. These glazes were created using a variety of materials, such as cobalt oxide for blue, copper oxide for green, and a mixture of cobalt and iron oxides for lapis lazuli.

As for the connection to Heian Tofukuji, it is said that Chinese ceramics, including Cantonese porcelain, had a profound influence on Japanese ceramics during the Heian period (794-1185). Tofukuji, a temple in Kyoto, is known for its distinctive ceramic tiles and roof decorations, which were likely inspired by Chinese ceramics imported to Japan at the time. It is possible that the colorful glazes on Cantonese porcelain played a role in inspiring the rich palette of colors used in Japanese ceramics of this period.

Part Of The Tim Shoup Collection:

Tim Shoup, a collector of everything bonsai (trees, pots and art), sold off his celebrated collection to New England Bonsai Garden (NEBG).

This is the beginning of a new chapter for Tim and an opportunity for NEBG to add hundreds of new items. A couple trees were accepted to the 2023 Nationals, In Rochester NY.

The item listed above was part of Tim’s collection. We are trying to provide you with as much information as possible (e.g. age, artist, flaws, etc). If you have any questions, please contact us. I try to describe the items to the best of my knowledge.
