All-Inclusive Bonsai Basics Workshops — Learn at a Working Nursery
Have you always wanted your own bonsai but aren’t sure where to start? This is the perfect workshop to begin your journey.
At New England Bonsai Gardens, you learn inside a working bonsai nursery where our team cares for hundreds of trees every day. This hands-on environment means you’ll learn real techniques, on real trees, in the same place they are trained and maintained. It’s an immersive learning experience you won’t find in a classroom or hobby store setting.
What You’ll Learn (Beginner-Friendly)
- Brief history and origins of bonsai
- Choosing trees suitable for bonsai
- Fundamental design and styling principles
- Planting, pruning, wiring, and repotting techniques
- Daily and seasonal care: watering, fertilizing, and pest awareness
You’ll take home a tree you styled yourself, and the knowledge to keep it thriving.

Hands-On Experience
Your instructor will guide you through selecting a pre-bonsai, transplanting, pruning, wiring, and shaping. You’ll leave with a beautiful bonsai and a clear care plan.
What’s Included
- Instructor guidance from experienced bonsai professionals
- Your choice of a tropical pre-bonsai tree (2–3 species available)
- A ceramic bonsai pot (with option to apply a $10 credit toward a different pot)
- All tools, soil, and materials needed during the workshop
Workshop Details
- Cost: $85 per student
- Date & Times:
- Saturday - April 25th from 1:00 PM – 3:30 PM
- Sunday - April 26th from 10:00 AM - 12:30 PM
- Class Size: Limited to 8 students
- Location: 914 S. Main Street, Bellingham, MA 02019
Workshops are held in the greenhouse behind our retail store.
Extras: Refreshments (water, soda, snacks) available for purchase.
All sales are final. No refunds will be issued for workshops.

Shipping Bonsai Trees:
Bonsai trees are generally shipped on Mondays & Tuesdays to avoid having them stay in the boxes for any extra time over the weekends.
Shipping Non-Tree Items
All non-bonsai items such as bonsai pots and bonsai supplies are shipped within 48 hours of receiving payment. Most orders are shipped either the same day or the next day, depending on the time of day the order is received.
Important Guidelines:
** We cannot ship to a FPO, APO, P.O. Box or to locations in Alaska, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hawaii or anywhere internationally.
** All Bonsai are shipped direct from the nursery and may ship separately from other items purchased via the Bonsai Outlet.
** If extreme weather is expected, we may delay shipping your Bonsai tree to guarantee a healthy arrival; in such a case we will contact you. We are shipping living trees and must be conscious of the temperature conditions to the delivery address, as well as, while in transit. That said, we reserve the right to hold the tree(s) to guarantee a healthy delivery. We will Hold Your Tree Until It is Safe to Ship.
