An akebia bonsai tree is a miniature ornamental tree created by training and pruning the Akebia quinata plant, commonly known as the chocolate vine or raisin vine.

Here are some key points about akebia bonsai:

  • Despite being a vine, akebia can be trained into bonsai form by careful pruning and wiring of the stems and branches to achieve a miniature tree-like appearance.
  • As a bonsai subject, akebia is prized for its interesting trunk and branch formations, as well as its fragrant chocolate-scented purple flowers in spring.
  • The small, edible fruit that follows the flowers resembles a miniature eggplant or kiwi fruit.
  • Akebia bonsai require full sun to partial shade, well-draining soil, and protection from extreme cold winters as the vines can die back.
  • Pruning is important to maintain the desired compact bonsai shape and control the rampant growth of this vigorous vine species.
