One-Of-A-Kind Sea hibiscus

This tree arrived at NEBG a few weeks ago. It came from a private collector and it needed a serious haircut. You can see in the pictures that the foliage is coming back nicely.

The Sea Hibiscus Bonsai, scientifically known as Hibiscus tiliaceus, is a tropical bonsai tree species renowned for its stunning, vibrant flowers and glossy foliage. This tree, native to coastal regions, combines the natural grace of hibiscus blooms with the artistry of bonsai cultivation.

The Sea Hibiscus features glossy, green leaves that are heart-shaped or slightly oval in appearance. The leaves are typically dark green, providing a lush backdrop for the bonsai's vibrant flowers.

One of the most striking features of the Sea Hibiscus Bonsai is its large, showy flowers. The blossoms can be a range of colors, including vibrant red, orange, yellow, or pink, depending on the specific cultivar. These flowers are often characterized by their trumpet-shaped petals and a prominent central stamen.

The trunk of the Sea Hibiscus Bonsai can develop a gnarled and twisted appearance with age. The bark is smooth, light gray, or brown when young, but it becomes rough and textured as the tree matures.

Sea Hibiscus Bonsais exhibit seasonal changes primarily through their flowering patterns. Depending on the specific variety, they may produce flowers throughout the year or more prolifically during certain seasons.

These bonsais thrive in warm, tropical or subtropical climates and prefer well-draining soil. Regular pruning, pinching, and wiring are essential to shape the bonsai, encourage branching, and control its size. Adequate sunlight, warmth, and humidity are crucial for the health and flowering of Sea Hibiscus Bonsais.

In summary, the Sea Hibiscus Bonsai is a captivating fusion of natural beauty and horticultural artistry. Its vibrant flowers and glossy foliage make it a sought-after addition to any bonsai collection.
