Hands-On Bonsai Pottery Workshop - A Deep Dive into the World of Bonsai Pottery (Sunday, June 2, 2024)

Join us for an immersive exploration into the art of bonsai pottery.

Learn how to select the perfect ceramic vessel for your tree and appreciate the craftsmanship behind each piece.

Prior to the workshop, Joe Perry will discuss the history and traditions of the art along with women’s influence on aesthetics. He will then explore the current state of women in bonsai ceramics in both the East and West and showcase examples.

Afterward, participate in an all-inclusive pottery demo with Moe, a celebrated New England artist. In this 3-hour workshop, you'll create a slab-built stoneware bonsai pot and a hand-formed pinch-pot. All supplies and tools are provided.

Moe will guide you through turning clay into ceramics and refine them with textural elements. Students will also craft their own pinch-pots. After the workshop, pots will be fired and finished, ready for pickup or shipment in about three weeks.

About the Instructor

Moe Lewis-Wolf is the passionate artist behind Fire and Hand Bonsai Pots. For over 25 years, she has been handcrafting ceramic pieces after honing her skills at the Worcester Craft Center under esteemed instructor Ginnie Gillen.

In recent years, Moe discovered bonsai and joined the Kaikou School at New England Bonsai Gardens, finding inspiration in melding her love of nature and ceramics. Her one-of-a-kind bonsai pots reflect her flair for texture and fluid lines. Ranging from intimate Kusamono pots to expansive vessels for large specimens, each of Moe's pieces is thrown by hand and finished with Mason stains and glazes.

Her focus on showcasing the raw earthenware skin of the clay encapsulates her vision of highlighting the elemental connection between bonsai, pot, and the natural world. As an artist, Moe finds motivation in the organic shapes and flows of nature and water. Her nontraditional approach gives bonsai enthusiasts the chance to showcase their trees with her signature earthy style.
