Bonsai Pottery Workshop with Paul Olson (Sunday, April 30, 2023)

This is a great & unique opportunity with a legendary New England artist.

Participants in this 3-hour workshop will create a slab-built stoneware bonsai pot and a hand formed pinch-pot.

** All supplies and tools will be provided.

After a brief discussion about turning clay into ceramics, Paul will demonstrate the process of building simple forms with leather hard slabs of clay, and then refining those forms into bonsai pots with textural elements.

Students will also make a pinch-pot or two of their own design from a ball of soft clay.

Following the workshop and drying time Paul will fire the pots in an electric kiln and add an iron oxide wash to bring out the texture in the clay of these unglazed bonsai pots.

Please note: it will take about 3 weeks to complete the firing. We will notify you when the pots are ready for pickup at NEBG. We can also ship the pots which will incur an extra shipping charge.

About the Instructor:

Paul Olson is famous in New England. He started making bonsai pots in 2006 after realizing a need for containers for all his trees he acquired over the years.

In addition to making bonsai pots, Paul is an Illustrator and Painter, a senior critic in the Illustration Department at the Rhode Island School of Design, and a Visiting Lecturer in the Illustration Department at the Massachusetts College of Art.

His bonsai pottery was featured at the 3rd National Juried Bonsai Pottery Exhibition at the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum at the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C. in 2015. One of his pieces earned a Second Place Award in the rectangle category.
